In the past few days we have visited both the Palazzo Barberini, full of art from ancient Rome through the 1700s, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, covering the 19th and 20th centuries.

The two museums cover a huge panorama. We were distracted at the Palazzo Barberini by the Madonna and child paintings that all seemed to have the same bird in them. When I double-checked in the bird book at home I found the answer. The bird shown in all these paintings is the European goldfinch. You can recognize it by the red, yellow and white on the face. I don’t know whether the goldfinch symbolizes something I don’t know about, or whether it was popular as a pet  at the time.                             Los dos museos cubren una panorama enorme. Estábamos distraídos en el Palazzo Barberini por las Madonnas con sus niños que parecían tener el mismo pájaro en ellos. Cuando revisé el libro de pájaros en casa, encontré la respuesta. The Barberini family used the bee as their personal symbol, and it appears on sculpture all over Rome. For example, the great canopy over the altar at St. Peter’s basilica, made by Bernini with bronze melted down from the Pantheon, is studded with Barberini bees. (They commissioned it.)

I was curious as to how Palazzo Barberini has the iconic portrait of Henry VIII. It turns out there are quite a few of them.

The Palazzo Barberini also had a fragment of a fresco by Rafael, and a painting by him of “La Fornarina,” Margherita Luti, a baker, and Rafael’s lover.

Classical statuary was all around the National Gallery of Modern Art, as well, though in a different role. Pieces were borrowed from the museum of ancient art, and were posed throughout the galleries as though the sculptures were contemplating the modern works.

My posts are heavy on art history lately, but Art is what Rome has in abundance. There are lots of quirky views and interesting sights embedded in Rome as well. Here are a few.

1) Though it may not mean the same in Italian as it does in English, I think my patron saint has to be Santa Maria in Trivio. (Yes, it should be trivia, but it’s close enough for me.) The church is near the Trevi Fountain, in case you, too, need to make a pilgrimage. The previous name of the church was Santa Maria in Fornica (no comment on how this might be translated).

Speaking of trivia, I’ve become a fan of a TV show on RAI1 called L’Hereditá. It’s a game show with lots of Italian vocabulary, and vaguely Jeopardy-style questions. What amazes me is how much US culture is included. I find myself shouting at the TV, “It’s Madonna! Come on, Madonna!” (or whatever).

2) We found a doorway and windows in the shape of monster mouths. These are part of the Palazzetto Zuccari, near the summit of the Spanish Steps. They also predate Fornasetti by a few hundred years.

3) Jonathan has been doing some inspired Italian cooking. It is interesting that Italian traditional cooking incorporates a lot of items that Americans, at least, are not accustomed to using. Zucchini flowers, for example, are known in the US, but not the kind of thing that you get in a summer farmer’s market or CFA share. Jonathan’s version were delicious, as well as attractively appetizing.

3) Jonathan ha estado haciendo un poco de cocina italiana inspirada. Es interesante que la cocina tradicional italiana incorpora una gran cantidad de artículos que los estadounidenses, al menos, no están acostumbrados a usar. Flores de calabacín, por ejemplo, se conocen en los EE.UU., pero no es el tipo de verdura que se obtiene en el mercado de un agricultor de verano o CFA. 4) Today’s surprise was on us, something we’ve heard about but not yet experienced. A day-long transit strike!! There are no subways and buses between 8:30 am and midnight, with a thoughtful exception for the rush hour 5-8 pm when the system will run. As a result, I have a day in which to catch up on my writing, blogging and other activities. This would be a reason to book lodgings close to the center of the city, so that you aren’t stranded a 40 minute walk away from the sights. (Just sayin….)

4) La sorpresa de hoy fue sobre nosotros, algo que hemos oído hablar, pero aún no experimentado. ¡Una huelga de tránsito de un día! No hay metro ni autobuses entre 8:30 am y la medianoche, con una excepción para la hora punta 5-8 pm cuando el sistema funcionará. Como resultado, tengo un día en el que ponerse al día en mi escritura, blogging y otras actividades. Esto sería una razón para reservar alojamientos cerca del centro de la ciudad, por lo que no están varados a 40 minutos a pie de los lugares de interés turístico. (Sólo digo….)

Among my productive activities of the day is to make tozzetti, which are almost indistinguishable from biscotti, so some good will come from the day.

You don’t have to be an archaeology lover to enjoy Ostia Antica. This ancient port of Rome is now inland, and though the Tiber flows nearby it no longer borders the remains of the ancient city.

Usted no tiene que ser un amante de la arqueología para disfrutar de Ostia Antica. Este antiguo puerto de Roma está ahora en el interior, y aunque el Tíber fluye cerca, ya no limita con los restos de la antigua ciudad.

Over the past couple of centuries a lot of Ostia has been excavated and is open for visits. Most of the rooms are uncovered, though there are roofs over a few of the more complex mosaics.

Most mosaics are made of black and white stone tiles (tessera). That means they are naturally preserved and don’t need to be protected from light. It looks like some of the mosaics suffer more from the stuff that grows on them while covered than from exposure to the sun.

It was one-third higher than the part you see here that is restored and could seat 2700 people.

Ancient Romans were well organized in the realm of hygiene. There were private (L) and public (R) toilets and baths. The biggest mosaics were from the floor of bath houses.

There were lots of statues along the walk. I decided to see how I’d look as a goddess.

Not much of the marble and travertine facing from the buildings at Ostia remains. After it was abandoned, the city was used as a marble quarry for other buildings and to make lime. A lot of the statues and inscriptions were baked to powder to make concrete for newer buildings.

Very little of the wall painting is left. The niche on the right held the household gods of a family. We did not see much that was associated with family life. The buildings that are most clearly identified were businesses or related to politics and religion.

There was a lot of Ostia Antica left to visit when our feet started to hurt. You could easily spend a couple of days visiting. If you have lively children to chase after, you might make it all around in a single day! After visiting as much of the outdoor portion of Ostia as we could, we returned to the museum and looked at the material that was salvaged from the ancient city. One statue is identified as being found at a lime kiln. Perhaps they liked it too much to turn it to powder.

Quedo mucho a visitar cuando nuestros pies empezaron a doler. Usted podría pasar un par de días visitando. ¡Si usted tiene niños vivos para perseguir después, usted puede ser que haga todo alrededor en un solo día! Even in the places you least expect it, there is something to see. These flowers were trying to make the most of life beside a trash can.

The trip to Ostia was easy on the train and this particular line is included in the metro system, so we could use our pass. Even paying full fare it is only €1.50 each way. The site charges admission (€8 this year).

We also saw some great birds, a colorful serin and a crazy-looking hoopoe. This is a place I can recommend to everyone.

We decided to go see Pope Francis. When he is in Rome, he holds and audience on Wednesday mornings. To obtain a free ticket you need to write to the pope directly (!) three months before your visit. But! I  read that if you show up and go through the metal detector, you can stand in the back. We thought, “Why not?” Pope Francis is a good guy, and when he lived in Argentina, he was practically a neighbor.  He’s a soccer fan, and the jersey that Pele signed for him is in the Vatican museum. We took our binoculars, thinking that we could at least get a peek at the pope with them. The wait to go through the metal detectors wasn’t bad at all, and we found that much of St. Peter’s Square was empty, so we walked as far forward as we could and found that the pope had begun his circuit of the square in his glorified golf cart. It holds him up high enough that you can see him over the selfie sticks. He circles all the pathways going one direction, then reverses his route so that he faces the crowd on each side in turn. It was great! We were so close that Jonathan got great pictures. Decidimos ir a ver al Papa Francis. Cuando está en Roma, se lleva a cabo y audiencia los miércoles por la mañana. People waved and cheered, held up pictures and banners. Pope Francis stopped now and then to shake hands and kiss babies. At the end of his tour, he climbed to the podium, stopping to shake hands with priests and cardinals clustered at the side. A series of priests had been recognizing visiting groups, rotating through different languages. Groups cheered when they heard their name. I understood the Czech group, but not the two that followed.

La gente agitaba y aplaudía, sostenía imágenes y pancartas. El Papa Francis se detuvo de vez en cuando para darle la mano y besar a los bebés. Al final de su recorrido, subió al podio, deteniéndose para estrechar la mano con sacerdotes y cardenales agrupados a un lado. After the recognitions ended, there was a program of prayer and some words from the Pope. We did not stay. Having seen the pope, our ulterior motive was to get in line and snag tickets to visit the Vatican Museums again. We wanted a second visit, but were frustrated that the Vatican web site wouldn’t take our credit card. We ended up in line with take out cappuchinos, chatting with a lovely couple from Mexico. An hour later we were at the ticket office where our ICOM cards got us free admission. We then spent another three hours looking through the Vatican museums, focusing on the Egyptian collection.

These are ushabtis, figures placed in Egyptian tombs that were intended to be reanimated in the afterlife as workers for the deceased. Most were dressed as farmers but there were also household staff. Many were inscribed with the spell needed to awaken them and get them back to work.

The Etruscan museum was closed, and that was the biggest disappointment. I read somewhere that the ethnographic collection was under long term renovation so I was not as disappointed to find that museum was also closed.

We had lunch at the cafe in a large open square inside the Vatican complex. Later we sat on a park bench looking out over the Vatican Gardens. You cannot see more of the gardens without a guided tour, so we contented ourselves with the view ad the shade. Pope Francis and the Vatican Museums all in one day was definitely a Vatican double-whammy.

Almorzamos en la cafetería en una gran plaza abierta dentro del complejo del Vaticano. Más tarde nos sentamos en un banco del parque con vistas a los jardines del Vaticano. Starting our day, we arrived at the cafe in the center of Piazza del Risorgimento at 7:30 am and met our guide. We stood in line until the doors of the Vatican museums opened at 8 am and then we kept moving until after 11 am. We declined stopping for a quick coffee because we wanted to keep looking, and make the most of our visit.

Comenzando nuestro día, llegamos a la cafetería en el centro de Piazza del Risorgimento a las 7:30 am y conocimos a nuestro guía. We had a wonderful tour–the standard Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour that ends in St. Peter’s Basilica. There were great things to look at everywhere from ancient sculpture to vestments made by Henri Matisse.

One of the things that surprised me was how much of the collections that you see are not religious art, but art and materials from all time periods. The sculpture called the Belvedere Torso was created around the 1st century BC. When Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to recreate the rest of the figure he declined saying that it was too beautiful to change. It is said to have inspired Rodin to create “The Thinker.”

We took a brief peek in the room full of Latin Americanists: Diego Rivera, Siquieros, Orozco. There was also Dali and Picasso, but we were focused on looking at things that are unique to the Vatican. Ornate is the word. The monstrance below is decorated with Italian red coral, now highly endangered, controlled and valuable.

Había tanto que ver que era antiguo que apenas paramos a mirar las pinturas del siglo XX. Hicimos un breve vistazo en la sala llena de latinoamericanistas: Diego Rivera, Siquieros, Orozco. También había Dali y Picasso, pero nos concentramos en mirar cosas que son únicas para el Vaticano. Ornamentado es la palabra. La custodia está adornada con coral rojo italiano, ahora muy amenazado, controlado y valioso.

When we made our plans to visit the Vatican, the material I read focused on sculpture and painting. There wasn’t much discussion of objects, though the Vatican collections include vast numbers of objects from excavations all over the Vatican property and in churches around the country and the world. There is a large Etruscan collection that includes pottery, metal work and lots of sarcophagi. We saw the entrance to the Etruscan Museum but it was not open. The Ethnographic Museum has been closed for a long time and the “Missionary Ethnographic Museum” was also closed for preparation of a new exhibit.

The objects in these two photos are just a fraction of the Etruscan artifacts on display at the Vatican.

These are gold crowns from the ancient Muisca of Colombia, below are objects from the Muisca and Sinú. Some of these pieces may have reached the Vatican from the hands of the earliest explorers, Ojeda, Balboa, Pedrarias Davila, or the clerics who accompanied them. These men originated the myth of Eldorado (the golden land) in the New World. You can see history passing from the hand of one person to the next.

During our visit to Rome, we’ve been looking for a large exhibit on ancient glass, but so far have only found a few objects here and there. When you google “Roman glass” or glassmaking, you get referred to the Corning Glass Museum in New York. The Vatican has some very interesting Roman glass vessels. I always wonder how they have survived all this time.

Durante nuestra visita a Roma, hemos estado buscando una gran exposición sobre vidrio antiguo, pero hasta ahora sólo hemos encontrado algunos objetos aquí y allá. Our guide said that everything in the Vatican collections was donated, either by the artist or by a Vatican supporter. The Vatican museums have auxiliary support groups all around the world and plaques honoring their donations are posted at regular intervals around the museums. The Vatican appears to get offered a lot of stuff. I bet they have a very polite “no thank you” letter that they send out pretty frequently. We were impressed with the quantity of material from Egypt that we saw. Some is ancient and some is Egyptian influence on architectural style.

Second only to the Sistine Chapel are the Rafael Rooms, walls in the private rooms of his patron Pope Julius II. Rafael sketched and painted all of one room and the start of the second room, finished by his students after his death. Rafael and Michelangelo were contemporaries but opposites even in life and death. Rafael (1483-1520) died at 37, Michelangelo (1475-1564) at 89. Rafael included both men in one of his panels in the Vatican, the School of Athens, representing Philosophy.

By 11:30 am we were utterly worn out and desperately in need of a place to sit down. We had to retrace our steps a VERY LONG and boring way to reclaim the umbrella that we were required to check (try not to check anything), and we promptly went across the street and sat in the nearest cafe. Sure enough it had tiny cappuchinos for double the usual price. It was worth it to sit and rest our feet after seeing such wonders.

Some things are different for the constant traveler and I was reminded of this while reading an online advice about travel in Rome. The writer suggested that all the major sights are so close together that it is really a waste of time to use public transit. The author’s attitude was “you can walk everywhere.” That is not my experience at all. For our month in Rome, we’ve rented an apartment in a comfortable residential neighborhood just west of Vatican City. Our apartment is spacious and the metro is nearby. That is very important, because it takes 10 minutes on the metro to get to the Vatican and 20 min to get to the Coliseum. I’ve been spending time looking at maps of Rome’s transit system to figure out how to get from where we live to neighborhoods not well served by the Metro, like Trastevere, or the Testaccio market, the new foodie mecca.

Rome has an excellent integrated transit system. You can use the same ticket on bus, metro, tram and some train lines, including the line to Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome. There is a monthly transit pass that is an excellent deal even if you are only in Rome for 2 weeks. The monthly pass is not advertised, but if you ask you can get a card to go anywhere on the system as frequently as you like for 35€ a month (a week is 24€).  The problem: There is no map that shows all the transit lines together and that shows where lines connect with others. The metro goes to some important stops, like the main train station Termini, and to the Coliseum. The bus system connects to the metro but you have to look up each line. The website that shows the transit lines hasn’t worked smoothly for me. I should be able to enter my address and the address of my destination and get a route. Instead, I get a message that none of the names match.

The tram system is concentrated in the old heart of the city, but it is difficult to see where it connects with the metro. The use of trams is understandable because excavation of a metro would take years of archaeological excavation. Every shovelful of dirt probably holds artifacts of Rome through the centuries. A new portion of the metro is being excavated between the Coliseum and the Basilica of Maxentius in the Forum. Inside the Forum you don’t notice anything, but on the outside you see that the Basilica has an enormous network of steel reinforcements holding it up so that the metro construction doesn’t collapse the entire remaining structure.El sistema de tranvía se concentra en el viejo centro de la ciudad, pero es difícil ver dónde se conecta con el metro. The Galleria Borghese is a monument to more is !! MORE !! in the world of art (I need some neon here). The building is a masterpiece of construction, consisting of two large floors that are built, lined and encrusted with mosaic floors, beautiful stonework, painted wall panels and ceilings that make it difficult to focus your eye on one place.

Many different artists were involved in the work. Some of the paintings are attributed to specific artists, while others are not. The ceilings are only part of the display. The walls hold paintings by Caravaggio, Rafael, Titian, Rubens and many other artists that are not as well known today, but were fortunate to have their work purchased by Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1577-1633), a great art patron. The Cardinal was a rapacious agent of his uncle, Pope Paul V. The pope made his nephew Scipione a cardinal, then bestowed many Vatican posts on him. Each position provided a salary and the collecting of fees. Scipione gained an enormous fortune and used it to purchase work by his favorite artists. One of those was Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Some wonderful works by Bernini are in the gallery.

On the left is Aeneas escaping Troy and carrying his father. On the right is Truth Unveiled by Time. But the Bernini sculpture I liked best is Apollo and Daphne. Bernini captures that moment in marble, with delicate leaves emerging from Daphne’s fingers, toes and hair.

There are some other famous details in Bernini works at the Galleria Borghese. In his sculpture of Proserpina being abducted by Pluto and carried off to the underworld, Bernini’s depiction of Pluto’s hand gripping her thigh is viewed as a masterwork of sculptural technique. You can see his fingers digging into her flesh as though it was soft, not made of marble.

There is also a beautiful sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte by Canova. It was something of a scandal when unveiled in 1808, but the semi-nude figure was holding an apple, thus it was not technically a nude portrait of Napoleon’s sister, but a depiction of her as the victorious goddess Venus, Venus Victrix. Perhaps it should be “Venus Vixen”.

In Rome, everything seems big, or huge, or ginormous. Monumental may be the best word. We felt this when we visited the Coliseum and it continued through our visits to the National Etruscan Museum and the Forum. The National Etruscan Museum is in the Villa Giulia, built in 1551-1553 by Pope Julius III. The building is elaborately decorated, with stonework and delicate painting. It is huge and full of objects from Etruscan sites.

Most objects come from tombs. What they called archaeology in those days was not like today. During the late 1700s and all during the 1800s tombs were cleared out and the objects sold to collectors.

There are rooms full of artifacts, including many Greek vases or Greek-style vases made in Italy. There are gorgeous Greek vases on display at the Etruscan museum, red-figured, black-figured, white backgrounds. The Etruscans were great clients of the finest Greek artisans around 500 BC. Here are a few of the ones we saw.

Euphronios Krater returned to Italy

By the end of the day our feet were throbbing and we needed to sit, but there is still so much to see. We decided the Forum was the next landmark essential for an archaeologist to visit. Again, monumental barely begins to describe the jumble of gigantic basilicas, columns, and churches packed into this site.

This is a portion of the Basilica of Maxentius. There is a third arch I couldn’t fit in the photo. It takes up a small corner of the Forum. In the photo to the right, I dared Jonathan to stand under the high point of masonry that looks like it is ready to fall down.

Sometimes it looks like the columns are all from a single sprawling temple. No way.

We also saw the center of the universe, for Romans, the “umbilicus” (belly button) of Rome. It was originally the site of sign indicating distances across the empire.

There are several area that you can call “Gardens of Lost Statuary,” rows and piles of pillars and architectural fragments that aren’t connected to anything else.

We discovered that Easter Monday is a national holiday in Italy. Since there were no more stores open than on Sunday we bought a few things to eat and then went to be tourists. At Termini, the main train station and subway crossing, we were able to get SIM cards for our phones and monthly passes for the Metro/bus system. A weekly metro pass is 24€ while the monthly pass is 35€. We did get incorrect directions to the metro ticket office from four different people before accidentally finding the right place.

Our next stop was the Coliseum. Nuestra siguiente parada fue el Coliseo.It is truly massive. We walked around the outside and plan to go back for a visit to the interior. We had a lunch of undercooked pizza in a tourist trap right by the Coliseum, but we knew what we were getting into and had low expectations. The day was gorgeous and the touristy portion of Rome was bustling with visitors. I cannot imagine the summer when the crowds will be larger and it will be 15° warmer!

Tuesday was a gloomy day and it even sprinkled on us as we went to the Trionfale market. Not all the stalls were open but there were wonderful fruits (tiny wild strawberries) and vegetables (artichokes of all sizes, zucchini flowers), salami, cheese and meat. We returned home for a fabulous lunch of goat salami, buffalo mozzarella, red pepper, olives, and fresh bread. It doesn’t get better than that.

It was a struggle to pass up all those movies and free drinks, but I did, and managed to get a few hours of sleep on our flight from JFK to Rome. We arrived at noon and met our taxi driver, who was kind enough to stop at a cash machine (enlightened self-interest) and in barely a half hour we were at our apartment west of Vatican City.  On Easter Sunday there was not much traffic and most businesses were closed. Fortunately for us, the gelateria across the street was open.

A few small stores were also open and we were able to buy fruit and things for dinner and breakfast in the morning. The sun was bright and the day was warm. The streets were very quiet, though we heard lots of voices coming from a large restaurant down a flight of stairs from the street. We are in a neighborhood of Rome that is packed with 8-story apartment buildings. When I look out the kitchen window I see neighboring buildings all around us, and we can watch people watering the plants on their balcony,  taking in the sun, or having a smoke.

Our apartment is a traditional Roman family home with a thin layer of Ikea on top. Our host, Simone, showed us framed photos of Rome taken by his grandfather in the 1920s, including the first automobile he purchased in 1923. The apartment belonged to his grandparents and is where his father and uncle grew up. Four years ago, Simone and his girlfriend Susanna spent six months living here while both restoring and updating the apartment. It is his only AirBnB property.
