Not by the guidebooks–public transit in Rome.

Some things are different for the constant traveler and I was reminded of this while reading an online advice about travel in Rome. The writer suggested that all the major sights are so close together that it is really a waste of time to use public transit. The author’s attitude was “you can walk everywhere.” That is not my experience at all. For our month in Rome, we’ve rented an apartment in a comfortable residential neighborhood just west of Vatican City. Our apartment is spacious and the metro is nearby. That is very important, because it takes 10 minutes on the metro to get to the Vatican and 20 min to get to the Coliseum. I’ve been spending time looking at maps of Rome’s transit system to figure out how to get from where we live to neighborhoods not well served by the Metro, like Trastevere, or the Testaccio market, the new foodie mecca.

Algunas cosas son diferentes para el viajero constante y me acordé de esto mientras leía un consejo en línea sobre viajes en Roma. El escritor sugirió que todos los principales lugares de interés están tan cerca que es realmente una pérdida de tiempo para usar el transporte público. La actitud del autor era “puedes caminar por todas partes”. Esa no es mi experiencia en absoluto. Para nuestro mes en Roma, hemos alquilado un apartamento en un cómodo barrio residencial justo al oeste de Ciudad del Vaticano. Nuestro apartamento es espacioso y el metro está cerca. Eso es muy importante, porque se tarda 10 minutos en el metro para llegar al Vaticano y 20 minutos para llegar al Coliseo. Rome has an excellent integrated transit system. You can use the same ticket on bus, metro, tram and some train lines, including the line to Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome. There is a monthly transit pass that is an excellent deal even if you are only in Rome for 2 weeks. The monthly pass is not advertised, but if you ask you can get a card to go anywhere on the system as frequently as you like for 35€ a month (a week is 24€).  The problem: There is no map that shows all the transit lines together and that shows where lines connect with others. The metro goes to some important stops, like the main train station Termini, and to the Coliseum. The bus system connects to the metro but you have to look up each line. The website that shows the transit lines hasn’t worked smoothly for me. I should be able to enter my address and the address of my destination and get a route. Instead, I get a message that none of the names match.

Puede utilizar el mismo billete en autobús, metro, tranvía y algunas líneas de tren, incluida la línea de Ostia Antica, el antiguo puerto de Roma. Hay un pase mensual de tránsito que es una excelente oferta incluso si estás solo en Roma por 2 semanas. The tram system is concentrated in the old heart of the city, but it is difficult to see where it connects with the metro. The use of trams is understandable because excavation of a metro would take years of archaeological excavation. Every shovelful of dirt probably holds artifacts of Rome through the centuries. A new portion of the metro is being excavated between the Coliseum and the Basilica of Maxentius in the Forum. Inside the Forum you don’t notice anything, but on the outside you see that the Basilica has an enormous network of steel reinforcements holding it up so that the metro construction doesn’t collapse the entire remaining structure.El sistema de tranvía se concentra en el viejo centro de la ciudad, pero es difícil ver dónde se conecta con el metro. El uso de tranvías es comprensible porque la excavación de un metro llevaría años de excavación arqueológica. Cada pala de tierra probablemente contiene artefactos de Roma a través de los siglos. Location, location….if you are in the city center you can walk, but there are lots of places that are only a subway ride away.

Art! ART!!! Galleria Borghese

The Galleria Borghese is a monument to more is !! MORE !! in the world of art (I need some neon here). The building is a masterpiece of construction, consisting of two large floors that are built, lined and encrusted with mosaic floors, beautiful stonework, painted wall panels and ceilings that make it difficult to focus your eye on one place.

La Galleria Borghese es un monumento a mas es !! MAS !! En el mundo del arte (necesito neon). El edificio es un obra maestra de la construccion, que consta de dos grandes pisos, forrados e incrustados con pisos de mosaico, bellas laminas de marmoles colorados, paneles pintadas y techos que hacen que sea dificil concentrarse en un solor area.

Many different artists were involved in the work. Some of the paintings are attributed to specific artists, while others are not. The ceilings are only part of the display. Around the rooms are busts of Roman emperors, and pieces of ancient statuary.        Muchas artistas diferentes participaron en el trabajo. Los techos son solo parte de la visión. Bustos de emperadores romanos y estatuas antiguas pelean por su atencion.

The walls hold paintings by Caravaggio, Rafael, Titian, Rubens and many other artists that are not as well known today, but were fortunate to have their work purchased by Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1577-1633), a great art patron. The Cardinal was a rapacious agent of his uncle, Pope Paul V. The pope made his nephew Scipione a cardinal, then bestowed many Vatican posts on him. Each position provided a salary and the collecting of fees. Scipione gained an enormous fortune and used it to purchase work by his favorite artists. One of those was Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Some wonderful works by Bernini are in the gallery.

On the left is Aeneas escaping Troy and carrying his father. On the right is Truth Unveiled by Time. But the Bernini sculpture I liked best is Apollo and Daphne. A dedicated virgin, she tries to escape Apollo but he catches her. At that moment, she cries out to her father the river god, who changes her into a tree. Bernini captures that moment in marble, with delicate leaves emerging from Daphne’s fingers, toes and hair.

There are some other famous details in Bernini works at the Galleria Borghese. In his sculpture of Proserpina being abducted by Pluto and carried off to the underworld, Bernini’s depiction of Pluto’s hand gripping her thigh is viewed as a masterwork of sculptural technique. You can see his fingers digging into her flesh as though it was soft, not made of marble.

David’s expression as he swings the rock in his sling toward Goliath is a study of concentration.

There is also a beautiful sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte by Canova. It was something of a scandal when unveiled in 1808, but the semi-nude figure was holding an apple, thus it was not technically a nude portrait of Napoleon’s sister, but a depiction of her as the victorious goddess Venus, Venus Victrix. Perhaps it should be “Venus Vixen”.

There are also charming works, like the three sleeping cherubs. This would warm anyone’s heart and it is all the more remarkable that they are made from terracotta. The boy pulling a thorn from his foot is another one.

The paintings are equally numerous, and placed as they are on walls of multi-colored marble, the Galeria Borghese gives you a huge burst of art.

Monumental means really really big, and a long walk.

In Rome, everything seems big, or huge, or ginormous. Monumental may be the best word. We felt this when we visited the Coliseum and it continued through our visits to the National Etruscan Museum and the Forum. The National Etruscan Museum is in the Villa Giulia, built in 1551-1553 by Pope Julius III. The building is elaborately decorated, with stonework and delicate painting. It is huge and full of objects from Etruscan sites.

En Roma, todo parece grande, o enorme, o gigante. ‘Monumental’ puede ser la mejor palabra. Sentimos esto cuando visitamos el Coliseo y continuó con nuestras visitas al Museo Nacional Etrusco y el Foro Romano. El Museo se encuentra en la Villa Julia, construida en 1551-1553 por el papa Julio III. El edificio está muy elaboradamente decorado, con canteria y pintura delicada. Es enorme y llena de objetos de sitios etruscos.

Most objects come from tombs. What they called archaeology in those days was not like today. During the late 1700s and all during the 1800s tombs were cleared out and the objects sold to collectors.

These are some examples of Etruscan art related to the sea. The stone carving is a warrior riding a dolphin. The plate on the left shows a myth of pirates turning into dolphins. The most famous object at the museum must be this sarcophagus of a man and a woman. It is much larger than any Etruscan sarcophagus I’ve ever seen, more like one from Egypt. The detail and high polish are dazzling.

There are rooms full of artifacts, including many Greek vases or Greek-style vases made in Italy. The Euphronios krater, a Greek vase famous for being returned to Italy by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was looted by tomb robbers from an Etruscan site. There are gorgeous Greek vases on display at the Etruscan museum, red-figured, black-figured, white backgrounds. The Etruscans were great clients of the finest Greek artisans around 500 BC. Here are a few of the ones we saw.

Euphronios Krater returned to Italy

I was also impressed by the terracotta portrait heads we saw.

By the end of the day our feet were throbbing and we needed to sit, but there is still so much to see. We decided the Forum was the next landmark essential for an archaeologist to visit. Again, monumental barely begins to describe the jumble of gigantic basilicas, columns, and churches packed into this site.

This is a portion of the Basilica of Maxentius. There is a third arch I couldn’t fit in the photo. It takes up a small corner of the Forum. In the photo to the right, I dared Jonathan to stand under the high point of masonry that looks like it is ready to fall down.

Sometimes it looks like the columns are all from a single sprawling temple. No way.

We also saw the center of the universe, for Romans, the “umbilicus” (belly button) of Rome. It was originally the site of sign indicating distances across the empire.

There are several area that you can call “Gardens of Lost Statuary,” rows and piles of pillars and architectural fragments that aren’t connected to anything else.

This is not just in the Forum. Parks often have fragments of lost columns incorporated into walls and benches, while buildings may be decorated with sculpted heads from many centuries earlier.

Easter Monday was a holiday–but the Coliseum stayed open.

We discovered that Easter Monday is a national holiday in Italy. Since there were no more stores open than on Sunday we bought a few things to eat and then went to be tourists. At Termini, the main train station and subway crossing, we were able to get SIM cards for our phones and monthly passes for the Metro/bus system. A weekly metro pass is 24€ while the monthly pass is 35€. We did get incorrect directions to the metro ticket office from four different people before accidentally finding the right place.

Descubrimos que el lunes de Pascua es una fiesta nacional en Italia. Ya que no había más tiendas abiertas que el domingo compramos algunas cosas para comer y luego fuimos a ser turistas. A Termini, la estación principal de trenes y metro, pudimos conseguir tarjetas SIM para nuestros teléfonos y pases mensuales para el sistema de metro / autobús. Un pase de metro semanal es de 24 €, mientras que el pase mensual es de 35 €. Conseguimos direcciones incorrectas a la oficina de boletos de metro de cuatro personas diferentes antes de encontrar accidentalmente el lugar correcto.

Our next stop was the Coliseum. Nuestra siguiente parada fue el Coliseo.It is truly massive. We walked around the outside and plan to go back for a visit to the interior. We had a lunch of undercooked pizza in a tourist trap right by the Coliseum, but we knew what we were getting into and had low expectations. The day was gorgeous and the touristy portion of Rome was bustling with visitors. I cannot imagine the summer when the crowds will be larger and it will be 15° warmer!

El Coliseo es verdaderamente masivo. Caminamos por el exterior y planeamos volver para una visita al interior. Tuvimos un almuerzo de pizza poco hecha en una trampa para turistas justo en el Coliseo, pero sabíamos lo que nos estábamos metiendo y tenía expectativas bajas. El día era precioso y la parte turística de Roma estaba bulliciosa con los visitantes. No puedo imaginar el verano cuando las multitudes serán más grandes y será 15 ° más caliente!

Tuesday was a gloomy day and it even sprinkled on us as we went to the Trionfale market. Not all the stalls were open but there were wonderful fruits (tiny wild strawberries) and vegetables (artichokes of all sizes, zucchini flowers), salami, cheese and meat. We returned home for a fabulous lunch of goat salami, buffalo mozzarella, red pepper, olives, and fresh bread. It doesn’t get better than that.

Roma!

It was a struggle to pass up all those movies and free drinks, but I did, and managed to get a few hours of sleep on our flight from JFK to Rome. We arrived at noon and met our taxi driver, who was kind enough to stop at a cash machine (enlightened self-interest) and in barely a half hour we were at our apartment west of Vatican City.  On Easter Sunday there was not much traffic and most businesses were closed. Fortunately for us, the gelateria across the street was open.

Fue una lucha para dejar pasar todas esas películas y bebidas gratis, pero lo hice, y nos las arreglamos para conseguir unas horas de sueño en nuestro vuelo de JFK a Roma. Llegamos al mediodía y conocimos a nuestro taxista, que tuvo la amabilidad de parar en un cajero automático (iluminado egoísmo) y en apenas media hora estábamos en nuestro apartamento al oeste de Ciudad del Vaticano. El domingo de Pascua no había mucho tráfico y la mayoría de las empresas estaban cerradas. Afortunadamente para nosotros, la gelateria al otro lado de la calle estaba abierto:

A few small stores were also open and we were able to buy fruit and things for dinner and breakfast in the morning. The sun was bright and the day was warm. The streets were very quiet, though we heard lots of voices coming from a large restaurant down a flight of stairs from the street. We are in a neighborhood of Rome that is packed with 8-story apartment buildings. 4.16.17 Rome-016When I look out the kitchen window I see neighboring buildings all around us, and we can watch people watering the plants on their balcony,  taking in the sun, or having a smoke.

Algunas pequeñas tiendas también estaban abiertas y pudimos comprar fruta y cosas para la cena y el desayuno en la mañana. El sol brillaba y el día era cálido. Las calles eran muy tranquilas, aunque oímos un montón de voces procedentes de un gran restaurante por un tramo de escaleras de la calle. Estamos en un barrio de Roma que está lleno de apartamentos de ocho pisos. Cuando miro por la ventana de la cocina, veo gente en los edificios vecinos regando las plantas en su balcon, tomando el sol o fumando.

Our apartment is a traditional Roman family home with a thin layer of Ikea on top. Our host, Simone, showed us framed photos of Rome taken by his grandfather in the 1920s, including the first automobile he purchased in 1923. The apartment belonged to his grandparents and is where his father and uncle grew up. Four years ago, Simone and his girlfriend Susanna spent six months living here while both restoring and updating the apartment. It is his only AirBnB property.

Nuestro apartamento es una casa de familia romana tradicional con una fina capa de Ikea en cima. Nuestro anfitrión, Simone, nos mostró fotos enmarcadas de Roma tomadas por su abuelo en la década de 1920, incluyendo el primer automóvil que compró en 1923. El apartamento pertenecía a sus abuelos y es donde creció su padre y su tío. Hace cuatro años, Simone y su novia Susanna pasaron seis meses viviendo aquí mientras tanto restaurando y actualizando el apartamento. Es su única propiedad AirBnB.

We are very comfortable and looking forward to being able to go shopping.

Meeting up with Spring.

We have been observing spring in the Northern hemisphere. We left Peru on March 31 and stayed for a week in Wheaton, IL. The weather was cool but the flowers were emerging.

Hemos estado observando la primavera en el hemisferio norte. Dejamos Peru el 31 de marzo y nos quedamos una semana en Wheaton, IL. El clima era fresco pero las flores estaben emergiendo.

From Wheaton we went to Syracuse, where the grass was starting to turn green. The moon was full and we watched it rise over  the forest at Green Lakes State Park.

De Wheaton fuimos a Syracuse, donde la hierba empezaba a ponerse verde. La luna estaba lleno y lo vimos subir sobre el bosque en Green Lakes State Park.

Six deer picked their way across the grass to graze while we watched.

We took a trip to Penn Yan and another to Seneca Falls, where we visited the National Women’s Hall of Fame. https://www.womenofthehall.org

It was intriguing to learn about the women who have done so many surprising things. Did you know that a woman invented Kevlar (bullet-proof vest material)?

Fue intrigante conocer a las mujeres que han hecho tantas cosas sorprendentes. Sabia usted que una mujer invento Kevlar (material de chaleco a prueba de balas)?

At the end of the week we drove to New York to spend a few hours with Lyra at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central station.

Al final de la semana fuimos a Nueva York para pasar unas horas con Lyra en el Oyster Bar en la estacion Grand Central.

From there we headed to JFK airport and our flight to Rome. We plan to return to the US on Nov. 1, 2017.

De alli nos dirigimos al aeropuerto de JFK y nuestro vuelo a Roma. Planeamos regresar a los Estados Unidos el 1 de noviembre, 2017.

 

Last visit to our favorite beach…. for now

We took a last visit to the Albufera de Medio Mundo, our favorite place to go beachcombing. It’s very isolated and we wanted to see the effect of recent weather on a beach that doesn’t get cleaned up every morning like ours does.

Hicimos una última visita a la Albufera de Medio Mundo, nuestro lugar favorito para ir a la playa. Está muy aislado y queríamos ver el efecto del clima reciente en una playa que no se limpian cada mañana como la nuestra.

There was a lot of plant debris and a lot of plastic bottles, sunscreen, shampoo, pop, water, toothpaste tubes, jerrycans, all shapes and sizes. There was a beach shelter or temporary camp of a fisherman. We usually find something interesting at Medio Mundo, but today it was mostly debris. There were quite a few dead sea birds. We often find dead animals here, this time there were no dolphins. It may be a seasonal differences. Sea birds die right before migration north begins, and dolphins die at the end of the winter in November and December.

Había una gran cantidad de desechos de plantas y un montón de botellas de plástico, crema solar, champú, pop, agua, tubos de pasta de dientes, jerrycans, todas las formas y tamaños. Había un refugio en la playa o un campamento temporal de un pescador. Generalmente encontramos algo interesante en Medio Mundo, pero hoy era principalmente escombros. Había bastantes aves marinas muertas. A menudo encontramos animales muertos aquí, esta vez no había delfines. Puede ser una diferencia estacional. Jonathan did manage to add a decorative touch to his hat. It goes with the aloha shirt. He’s been an ace beachcomber lately. On our beach he’s found two sets of keys just in the past week. Now that we’ve given up on seashells because we have so many, we still look for “things”.

Have you ever wondered where things go that get lost on the beach? How many people have lost a single flip-flop somehow and wondered where it could have gone. Now I can tell you: they are all at Medio Mundo.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the beach here between now and November when we return again. Sera interesante ver que pasa aqui entre hoy y noviembre cuando regresamos.

This location is named after the lagoon that lies between the sandspit with the beach and the mainland. The lagoon has turned a strong green color. It may be from runooff from the very large Redondos chicken plant on the mainland opposite the lagoon. Redondos is the largest producer of chicken in Peru and very powerful. I don’t know if the lagoon will ever turn blue again.

El Albufera toma su nombre de la laguna que queda entre la playa y la tierra firme, pero ultimamente la albufera esta un color verde fuerte. Puede ser descarga de aguas de la planta Redondos que esta en la tierra frente la albufera. Redondos es el productor de pollos mas grande en todo Peru y tiene bastante poder. No se si la laguna recuperara su color azul.

Cheering up the Patio

With the help of our talented friend Leila, we added some color to the patio.

Con el ayuda de nuestra talentosa amiga Leila, mejoremos el patio con colores nuevos.

I provided some images of birds from ancient Peruvian pottery and Leila used them to create her own contemporary versions on decorative planters. She even told me how to paint the chairs (white undercoat with color sponged over that).

Proporcione a Leila unos imagenes de pajaros de antiguo ceramica peruano. Ella hizo su magia trasformando las macetas. Me explico como pintar las sillas (base blanco con color encima puesto con esponja).

The patio is brighter now. I love the colors and the way she incorporated the ancient designs into contemporary pots. They are great!

Ahora el patio es mas alegre. Me gusta los colores y como los motivos ancianos estan mezclados con algo contemporaneo. Son lo maximo!

Rain–El Niño–Disaster

A strong El Nino was predicted for December 2015 through April 2016 in Peru, and the government made funds available for disaster prevention. The season passed with barely a rain shower and the ocean only warmed slightly. Disaster averted. This year, no El Nino was forecast when the rains began. Up and down the coast of Peru from south of Lima to the border with Ecuador, rain began to fall in areas where there has been no measurable rain since 1998-99, the last notable El Nino event. After flooding began, recent events were called a slight El Nino along the coast. Let me say right now, this is an all-out El Nino complete with pouring rain and terrible flooding.

El ano pasado prognosticaron un Nino fuerte y el gobierno peruano hiso precauciones extensos. Paso la temporada con poca lluvia y la temperatura del mar poco elevado. Nada de desastre. Este ano con ningun El Nino en la vision meterologico, llego las lluvias. Desde mucho al sur de Lima hasta la frontera con Ecuador, ll lluvia cayo en areas sin lluvia desde la ultima fenomeno del Nino fuerte 1998-99. Cuando las inundaciones empezaron, declararon un leve el Nino por la costa. Te digo, esto es un El Nino total con lluvia torencial y inundaciones desastrosos.

Many places in the world are accustomed to rain. It rolls off roofs and into gutters and storm drains, recharges the ground water and waters the crops. The coast of Peru is accustomed to no rain at all. The effects of this El Nino are therefore devastating. Think about deferred maintenance–regular repairs are put off because the fix doesn’t seem to be needed. In California, the secondary spillway of the Oroville Dam wasn’t faced with concrete because it seemed unlikely it would ever be used. Less than 50 years later, two days of use carved out a dangerous amount of soil and people wondered why the concrete was never laid. Who plans for a 50 year storm? It turns out that we probably should do that. Now think about planning for a 100 year storm. We struggle to imagine it.

Muchos lugares en el mundo estan acostumbrado a la lluvia. El agua roda de techos a canales y sistemas de drenaje, recarga la napa freatica y da agua a las cosechas. La costa de Peru esta acostumbrado a ningun gota de lluvia por lo cual los efectos del Nino estan devastadoras. Piensa en el mantenimiento postergado–arreglos que no hacen porque no parecen necesarios. En California, un canal de escape secundaria de la represa Oroville no fue cubierto en concreto porque era poca posibilidad que jamas seria en uso. Menos de 50 anos despues, dos dias de lluvias fuertes lleno el reservorio tanto que el escape perdio mucho de su superficie de tierra. Gente preguntaron porque el concreto nunca fue puesto. Que planifica para una tormenta de 50 anos? Probablemente debemos. Y planificando para un tormenta de  cada 100 anos. Es dificil imaginar.

The news has shown over and over the dramatic video of a woman covered in mud, a ghostly phantom emerging from the middle of a flooding river. Las noticias muestran constantemente el video impresionante del mujer envuelto en lodo, una fantasma grisacio que emerge del centro de un huaico.

Lumber from downed structures chokes the flooding rivers. When the water recedes, thick mud is left behind, filling the pipes of water and sewer systems, streets and the floors of houses. Right now, many communities have no water and sewer service, transport lines are cut by collapsing bridges and access to food is diminishing with every day that emergency bridges are not in place. Food prices are rising. Speculation is underway. We saw a woman buying 60 kilos of rice. Is this to feed her family? I doubt it. Is it to hoard and sell at ten times the usual rate? Possibly.

Madera de estructuras botadas por el agua embotella los rios. Cuando retira el agua, un capa de fango queda, llenando la tuberia de sistemas de agua y alcantarillados, carreteras, caminos y casas. Ahora, muchas comunidades no tienen agua ni sistemas sanitarias, redes de transporte estan cortados por puentes colapsados. Aceso a viveres disminuya cada dia que puentes Bailey o alternativas no estan puestos. Los precios estan subiendo incluso especulacion. Vimos una senora comprando 60 kg de arroz en Metro. Esto para alimentar su familia? Lo dudo. Es para vender a diez veces su precio normal? Puede ser.

We are fortunate to be in a place where the rivers don’t threaten to flood us, and the local water system is still working. The ocean has become something of a hazard as it fills with debris being dumped ton after ton from the river mouths. Piles of brush from flooded riverbanks wash up with every tide, and today a coating of foam is coming with it. Chunks of foam break off and roll across the sand like tumbleweeds. The water is murky. I have stopped swimming.

Somos afortunados de vivir en un lugar donde los rios no nos amenaza y el sistema de agua todavia funciona. El mar ha vuelto peligroso, llena de toneladas de escombros de los rios. Ramas, arboles y basura sale con cada marea y hoy una capa de espuma le acompana. Pedazos de espuma rodan atraves de la arena como globos. El agua esta turbida. He dejado bagnar en el mar.

The greatest problem is that no one knows when the weather will change and the rain will stop. We have had only one rainstorm here in Barranca, but everyone knows that the rain can return any day and if it does no one know what will happen. There are channels that have not held water in 50 years, there are channels through archaeological sites that may be from floods 1000 years ago, and depending on the location and intensity of the rain, any day these can fill again and start washing away everything in their path as they make their way to the nearest river, pushing houses, livestock and crops before them.

El mayor problema es que nadia sabe cuando pare la lluvia. En Barranca, hemos sufrido solamente una noche de lluvia, pero todos saben que en cualquier dia la lluvia puede regresar y si esto pasa, nadia sabe que ocurrira. Hay canales y huaicos que tienen 50 anos sin agua. Hay sitios arqueologicos que tienen huaicos de hace mil anos. Depend de la ubicacion y intensidad de la lluvia todos estos pueden llenar de nuevo, empujando todo en su camino hacia los rios; las casas, animales y cosechas.

Today the forecast is for rains up and down the coast continuing for another two weeks, through the first week in April. It might take another two weeks for debris dumping into the ocean from the river mouths to abate to pre-El Nino levels and another two weeks for the bulk of what is going to wash up on shore to do so. By then it will be May and I will be long gone. I wonder what it will be like when we return in November?

Hoy el prognostico es que la lluvia continua por quince dias, hasta la primer semana de abril. Los rios tal vez continuan hechar escombros el el mar otro quince dias despues y otro quincena mas antes de que los escombros dejan de salir con la marea. Sera maio y yo seria en viaje ya un mes. Como va a estar en noviembre cuando regresamos?

 

 

Rain!

When we came to Peru in 1999, people showed us the tiny splash marks of raindrops in the desert and said they were from the last rainfall, in 1964. That may have been hyperbole, because there is thick sea mist, but last night, it really rained, for the first time since we put the new roof on the house in 2004. We have a system of gutters to carry off the morning condensation, but they promptly overflowed. It turns out that when it rains enough to dislodge 13 years accumulation of dust, everything plugs up.

Cuando llegemos a Peru en 1999, nos mostraron una pequenas marcas de gotas en las pampas y nos dijeron que fueron de la ultima lluvia, en 1964. Tal vez fue un exageracion porque hay llovizna, pero anoche, lluvio en serio por la primera vez desde pusimos el techo nuevo en 2004. Tenemos un sistema de canales que llevan el agua que gotea del techo, pero de pronto rebalsaron. Cuando llueva y quita 12 anos de polvo en el techo, todo se tapo.

It didn’t seem like much of an issue until we realized that the water was running into the spaces around the two trees in the patio and when it overflowed, the water would pour into the bedroom that is at a slightly lower level. Water was already leaking in and I put down towels to soak it up and discovered that the water was very, very dirty. Minor panic ensued. Then the power went out.

No parecia problematica hasta que nos dimos cuenta que el agua estaba llenando los espacios alrededor de los arboles en el patio central y si desbordaba, el agua fluiria dentro del habitacion a nivel mas baja del patio y estaba ya entrando. Cuando puse toallas para contener el agua, vi que era muy sucia. Empece el panico. Y se fue la luz…..

Fernando, our caretaker, climbed up on the roof and cleared the blocked drains, which required disconnecting a pipe to the storm drain because there was too much water. When he did that, water spurted across the roof and onto the back patio, but at least it stopped draining into the center of the indoor patio. While I shone the flashlight and pointed out where the water was still dripping, Fernando cleared and adjusted the gutters until it was stable. The power was off all night–this morning he discovered that a light fixture in the back yard had filled with water and created a short.

Vino Fernando, subio en el techo y abrio los canales bloqueados, incluso desconectando un tubo de drenaje porque habia demasiado agua. Con esto, un chorro de agua tiro hacia el patio atras, pero por lo menos quito el agua chorreando en el patio. Yo ilumine los canales con la linterna y Fernando limpio y ajusto los canales hasta que todo estaba bien. La luz no regreso hasta la manana, cuando se dieron cuenta que una pequena lampara habi llenado con agua, cortando el sistema.

It was a rather sticky night after the rain stopped, because the temperature didn’t really fall much and we had no fan because of the power, but I was glad to find power back by the time I got up. There was some cleaning of mud from the patio, but the weather forecast is for more rain tonight. I’m hoping we are a bit better prepared.

La noche fue bochornoso porque la lluvia no bajo la termperatura y sin luz no habia ventilador. Por lo menos estaba arreglada pronto en la manana. Era necesario limpiar el patio pero el prognostico es para mas lluvia esta noche. Espero que estamos mejor preparada.
