Once we moved back in to our Mendocino house, we had a busy day. We’d decided to attend the benefit for the Mendocino Botanical Garden called “Art in the Garden”. It’s held on the first Saturday in August each year, and this year it was Aug. 1. The flowers were gorgeous, dahlias and begonias amongContinue reading “August is the best month on the north coast”

Ch ch ch Changes, or sun, sand and packing–still no water-saving shower heads in the motel.
This week was the best weather since we’ve been in northern California. We discovered that you need a guidebook to find some of the access points to the coastal trails, because they are so well hidden. Homeowners are not necessarily trying to prevent public access to the coast, but the rights-of-way are very specific. YouContinue reading “Ch ch ch Changes, or sun, sand and packing–still no water-saving shower heads in the motel.”
Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse, July 23, 2015
Again, we set out to fish and were dissuaded by the waves. Beautiful, but no luck. We were on the Caspar Headlands. We could hear the barking of sea lions from our fishing spot, and found about 50 sea lions sunning themselves on the rocks in the background of this photo. Here’s a closer look.Continue reading “Pt. Magical Realism? July 20, 2015
Did you know that redwoods grow more successfully from sprouts that form around the base of a tree, utilizing the nutrients and root system of a mature tree? Low Tide follies, Sunday July 6-Monday July 7 (and an abalone bandit)
The lowest tides between July 1 and Sept 1 were on July 6 and 7. We decided to take advantage of the very lowest tide on Sunday to visit the beaches to the south of the Glass Beach in Ft. Bragg. This was .9 ft lower than the usual low tide. These are the beachesContinue reading “Low Tide follies, Sunday July 6-Monday July 7 (and an abalone bandit)”
Another gorgeous day on the coast
There has been much less mist and much more sun the past three days (6/22-6/24), and we have continued to explore the coast between our house in Little River and Ft. Bragg, our next stop.We walked a trail along the headlands just south of Mendocino Bay, near Chapman Point: That’s the town of Mendocino inContinue reading “Another gorgeous day on the coast”
California State Parks are the place to go.
California is full of state parks, something I did not know. Between Mendocino and Ft. Bragg are a string of parks that provide access to the coast. Some charge $8.00 to park. If you park elsewhere and walk in there’s no charge, but sometimes there is no alternative. We’ve started looking for cars parked byContinue reading “California State Parks are the place to go.”
