Making Mosaics

There are mosaics in Venice, but I didn’t find any place that was making mosaics. In Ravenna, however, there are several large mosaic studios. We visited one and I enjoyed seeing the range of work that was being done. Some pieces are copies of classical mosaics, or pieces made in classical style.

Lots of other styles are made, too. We watched a woman work on a lamb that was covered with tooth-sized pieces making it’s wooly coat. She seems to have just finished making a wolf for the same set.

I liked some of the birds that they’d made.

And I enjoyed seeing the materials that were around the studio.

Here’s a clever design I saw in a nearby gift shop. I’d hang one of these in my kitchen.

I am a retired archaeologist and I like to travel, especially to places where you can walk along the shore or watch birds. My husband Jonathan and I travel for more than half the year every year, seeing all the places that we haven't gotten to yet.
