Every year is different in far northern California. Daffodils bloomed at the end of January, trees flowered in February. Temperatures got down to about 40 F. at night, rarely lower. Daytimes were warmer, though only in the low 50s, though that was nicer than anywhere else in the country. Until last week when it beganContinue reading “Spring comes to Humboldt”

“Not My President”‘s Day
I went to a protest against what is wrong with our government today, and discovered that a lot of people think there are a lot of things going wrong. It may be difficult to address these issues overall because there are so many of them. Most people could agree on one thing: There were 300Continue reading ““Not My President”‘s Day”
Election 2024–Note to Self
Quick! Before you completely forget what you felt when you first knew the election results, sit down and write down the first things that popped into your head. At the end, add a couple of thoughts you’ve had since. We’ll come back and read these in a few years and see what we think. IContinue reading “Election 2024–Note to Self”
For the Glory! The Kinetic Grand Championship 2024
Every Memorial Day weekend there is a uniquely local celebration, the Kinetic Grand Championship race. It’s had different names, and took a break for Covid, but has come back in force, showing the very best in community craziness. To me, this event is the essence of Humboldt. If you want to know why people chooseContinue reading “For the Glory! The Kinetic Grand Championship 2024”
Rainy Season
Winter in Eureka is often rainy, but rarely colder than 50o F. during the day. I’ve been appreciating that fact this week, when our former home in the midwest was -9o F. Between rainstorms, the sun occasionally comes out in Eureka, and I’ve seen some spectacular clouds bringing the weather in and out.
Art for a Cause
I’ve been making jewelry from beach glass for several years, and enjoying it. I’m interested in anything related to beach combing and making things with those finds, which is how I entered the annual Junque Arte show at the local art museum. It was fascinating and inspiring to see what others made and to getContinue reading “Art for a Cause”
Peloponnese (4): More Sparta, Mystras
The Temple of Artemis Orthia is in a different part of Sparta, and waiting until the next morning to visit gave us a moment of sun at the site. This temple goes back to the 9th century BC and was in use for over 1000 years. It is where people went to make offerings toContinue reading “Peloponnese (4): More Sparta, Mystras”
In the Rain
I wouldn’t have driven all the way to Santa Rosa from Eureka (150+ miles) without a good reason. My doctor’s appointment could not be put off, and Jonathan did most of the driving. I took advantage to stare out the window at the mist and rain and take a lot of photos. We did notContinue reading “In the Rain”
Earthquake! 12/20/22
I’ve already heard jokes about the lengths I’ll go to get material for my blog, but I promise you I had nothing to do with the earthquake that hit Tuesday at 2:34 am. We were jolted awake and wondered briefly whether we should put on coats and go outside. The shaking stopped by then andContinue reading “Earthquake! 12/20/22”
Endings.
I stared at the ceiling in the middle of the night imagining how to write about the sale of our house in Peru. We owned our huge, wonderful, historic house for twenty years, visiting every year. At first, it was our research station, where we arrived the week after school let out and stayed untilContinue reading “Endings.”
